   4 A contributor to the Free Software community since 1979, Bdale's background
   5 also includes many years of hardware design, Unix internals, and embedded
   6 systems work.  He was an early participant in the Debian project, helped port
   7 Debian GNU/Linux to 5 architectures, served as Debian Project Leader, then
   8 chairman of the Debian Technical Committee for nearly a decade, and remains
   9 active in the Debian community.

  11 In 2012, Bdale retired from HP, where he served as Chief Technologist for Open
  12 Source and Linux.  After briefly working for Samsung as an open source advisor,
  13 Bdale returned to HP in 2014 as an HP Fellow in the Office of the CTO where
  14 for 25 months he led HP's open source strategy work before returning to
  15 retirement late in 2016.  During his tenure, HP (later HPE) engaged in a wide
  16 variety of open source activities, and maintained consistent market leadership
  17 in the sale of servers and storage to Linux users.

  19 Altus Metrum, LLC, is a small business Bdale founded with Keith Packard that
  20 designs, builds, and sells completely open hardware and open source avionics
  21 solutions for use in high power model rockets.

  23 For a decade, Bdale served as President of Software in the Public Interest.
  24 He served nearly as long on the board of directors of the Linux Foundation
  25 representing individual affiliates and the developer community.  Bdale
  26 currently serves on the boards of the Freedombox Foundation, Linux
  27 Professional Institute, and Aleph Objects.  He is also a member of the
  28 Evaluations Committee at the Software Freedom Conservancy, and continues to
  29 speak at Linux and open source conferences from time to time.

  31 In 2008, Bdale became the first individual recipient of a Lutece d'Or award
  32 from the Federation Nationale de l'Industrie du Logiciel Libre in France.

  34 Bdale engages in a wide variety of personal activities.  In addition to
  35 high-powered model rocketry and home shop machining, he is widely known for
  36 his contributions to the amateur radio hobby including packet radio,
  37 weak-signal communications, software defined radio, and building amateur
  38 satellites.
