   6 As HP's Open Source & Linux Chief Technologist, Bdale Garbee advises the
   7 lead technologists in other HP business units and other HP decision makers
   8 on technology and community aspects of Linux and Open Source applications.
   9 He mentors internal communities on how to productively participate in the
  10 Open Source development process, and encourages the adoption of Open Source
  11 software and principles across the company.

  13 A contributor to the Free Software community since 1979, Bdale's background
  14 also includes many years of hardware design, Unix internals, and embedded
  15 systems work.  He was an early participant in the Debian project, helped port
  16 Debian GNU/Linux to 5 architectures, served as Debian Project Leader, is
  17 chairman of the Debian Technical Committee, represents Debian on the Ubuntu
  18 Technical Board, and remains active in the Debian community.

  20 Bdale serves as President of Software in the Public Interest, and on the
  21 boards of directors of the Linux Foundation, the Freedombox Foundation, and
  22 Open Media Now.  He is a frequent speaker at Linux and Open Source
  23 conferences, and works closely with various projects in the Open Source
  24 community.

  26 In 2008, Bdale became the first individual recipient of a Lutece d'Or award
  27 from the Federation Nationale de l'Industrie du Logiciel Libre in France.

  29 Beyond his work at HP, Bdale engages in a wide variety of personal activities.
  30 His most significant hobbies are high-powered model rocketry and amateur radio,
  31 where he is widely known for his contributions to packet radio, weak-signal
  32 communications, software defined radio, and building amateur satellites.
